Indices

What is an index?

An index calculates the collective price performance of a group of stocks, usually from a specific country, region or industry. Indices are often used to track and compare the performance of stock markets and invest wisely in index market.

The price performance of each index is determined by the performance of the underlying stock prices that make up the index.

An index is created and calculated independently, often by a bank or by a specialised index provider such as the London Stock Exchange.
